Why do full moons have names?
The names come from North American almanacs, which drew on Native American and colonial traditions. Each one marks something happening in nature that month. They follow Northern Hemisphere seasons, so in Australia or New Zealand a Harvest Moon falls in spring.
- Wolf Moon
- Named for wolves howling in the deep of winter.
- Snow Moon
- February is the snowiest month across much of North America.
- Worm Moon
- Earthworms reappear as the ground thaws.
- Pink Moon
- Named for early spring wildflowers, not the color of the Moon.
- Flower Moon
- Flowers bloom across North America in May.
- Strawberry Moon
- Marks the short season for picking wild strawberries.
- Buck Moon
- Bucks grow their new antlers in midsummer.
- Sturgeon Moon
- Great Lakes sturgeon were easiest to catch in late summer.
- Harvest Moon
- The full moon nearest the fall equinox, rising early enough to light the harvest.
- Hunter's Moon
- The one after the Harvest Moon, when hunters stocked up for winter.
- Beaver Moon
- Beavers build their winter dams and trappers set their traps.
- Cold Moon
- The longest, coldest nights of the year begin.

- The second full moon in a calendar month.
