How to read this

Major periods last about two hours, centered on the moment the Moon is highest or lowest in the sky. Minor periods last about an hour, around moonrise and moonset. A window near sunrise or sunset is the one to plan around.

What makes a best day?

Days within one day of a new or full moon rate Best, and days within three rate Good. The rest are Fair. This follows the solunar theory John Alden Knight published in the 1930s. It is a fishing tradition rather than a proven rule, so weather, water and tides still come first.
