What are full moons and supermoons?
A full moon occurs when the Moon is opposite the Sun in the sky and its visible disc is fully illuminated. The exact instant is the same worldwide, but local dates and times differ. It also looks nearly full on the evenings before and after.
A supermoon is a full moon near the closest part of the Moon’s orbit. It appears somewhat larger and brighter than an average full moon. Definitions vary; our calendar uses a consistent distance-based rule. A micromoon is a full moon near the farthest part of the orbit.
A blue moon here means the second full moon in one calendar month. It does not mean that the Moon turns blue. Because this definition depends on calendar dates, the result can depend on the time zone.
How we calculate
Dates and times are calculated by our own software using the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets. Interactive views use your selected city and its time zone. Reference tables state their fixed time zone separately. Astrological ratings and interpretations describe traditions, not scientifically established effects.
