What are Moon phases?
The Moon’s phase describes how much of its sunlit half we can see from Earth. A cycle takes about 29.5 days and includes four principal phases.
- New Moon: the Moon is in the same direction as the Sun, with its illuminated side facing away from us.
- First Quarter: half the visible disc is illuminated and the Moon is waxing.
- Full Moon: the visible disc is fully illuminated.
- Last Quarter: half the disc is illuminated and the Moon is waning.
The exact instant of a phase is the same worldwide; its local date and clock time vary by time zone. Our illustrations use the Northern Hemisphere convention: waxing light on the right, waning light on the left. The Moon’s apparent orientation varies with your location and its position in the sky.
Between the main phases, the Moon is a crescent when less than half is lit and gibbous when more than half is lit.
