What is a birth chart?

A birth chart, or natal chart, is a map of the sky at the moment you were born. It shows the sign and house of the Sun, the Moon and each planet, along with the angles between them. Astrology reads these as the themes of your life. Treat it as a way to reflect, not as a prediction.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For your rising sign and houses, yes. The rising sign changes about every two hours, and house positions shift even faster. Without a time we draw the chart for noon and leave those parts out. Your Sun and most planets stay correct either way, and we tell you if the Moon changed sign that day.

How to read your chart

Start with your Big Three: Sun, Moon and rising sign. Then look at each planet as a part of you (Venus is how you love, Mars how you act), its sign as the style, and its house as the area of life. Aspects are the angles between planets. Trines and sextiles help, squares and oppositions push.

How we calculate it

Planet positions come from Astronomy Engine, an open-source library that matches NASA data, and we checked our results against the Swiss Ephemeris, the standard in astrology software: planets agree to within 0.005° and house cusps match. We use the tropical zodiac and Placidus houses, with whole-sign houses above 66° latitude, where Placidus breaks down. Historical time zones and daylight saving are included.
