What is a rising sign, and how is it calculated?

Your rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising over the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It changes roughly every two hours, though the rate varies with latitude and sign. You need an accurate birth time and birthplace to calculate it.

The Sun, Moon and rising signs are often called the Big Three. In astrology, the Sun represents identity and aims, the Moon feelings and habits, and the rising sign your outward approach. These are symbolic interpretations, not personality tests.

Use the local clock time recorded at birth, ideally from a birth record. Even a half-hour difference can change the result near a boundary. The calculator accounts for historical time zones and daylight saving. If your time is uncertain, treat the result as approximate; unusual cases in polar regions also require care.
