What is a new moon?

A new moon occurs when the Moon is in the same direction as the Sun. Its sunlit side faces away from Earth, so the disc is normally invisible. The new moon starts the lunar month and lunar day 1 in this calendar.

A thin waxing crescent becomes visible in the western evening sky soon afterwards, when observing conditions allow. A solar eclipse occurs only when the alignment is close enough for the Moon to pass in front of the Sun.

How we calculate

Dates and times are calculated by our own software using the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets. Interactive views use your selected city and its time zone. Reference tables state their fixed time zone separately. Astrological ratings and interpretations describe traditions, not scientifically established effects.
