How does Moon gardening work?

Moon gardening is a traditional approach to choosing planting dates within your local growing season.

Waxing Moon: traditionally favored for crops harvested above ground, including leafy vegetables, fruiting vegetables, flowers, trees and shrubs.
Waning Moon: traditionally favored for roots and bulbs, including carrots, potatoes, onions and garlic.
Moon sign: this calendar also considers the Moon’s tropical zodiac sign when rating planting dates.
New and full moons: traditionally set aside from planting and transplanting. Water plants when they need it.

The calendar can be used as a traditional guide for seedlings and houseplants too. Local weather, soil conditions, season and the needs of the plant take priority. These ratings are not evidence that lunar timing improves crop yields, and a favorable rating does not make an unsuitable season safe for planting.

Dates and times are calculated by our own software using the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets. Interactive views use your selected city and its time zone. Reference tables state their fixed time zone separately. Astrological ratings and interpretations describe traditions, not scientifically established effects.
